Below are the fundamentals you should know to get the veteran in your life and/or his or her spouse the home care assistance they have earned. The Veterans Administration has established qualification criteria for Veterans and/ or the surviving spouses applying for the Aid and Attendance benefit.
• Veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran who served 90 days or more on active duty.
• Applicant must have a medical condition that requires assistance with activities of daily living.
• Veteran must have an honorable discharge.
• Meet income-to-medical expense ratio.
• Meet asset requirements.
You may apply for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits by submitting the prescribed VA forms to the Pension Management Center that serves your state. You may also visit your local regional benefit office to file your request. Listed below are the documents you will need to have on hand in order to apply for the Aid and Attendance benefit.
• Copy of current year Social Security Letter.
• DD-214 Military discharge papers.
• Proof of all assets (bank and investment statements) and income.
• Proof of insurance premiums and unreimbursed medical expenses.
