4 Tips to Help a Senior’s Immune System

In this new age of COVID-19 (coronavirus), we’ve all been taking the measures necessary to stay healthy and safe. That includes social distancing, washing our hands, and boosting our immune systems. Our seniors especially should go the extra mile to build up their immune systems as a preventative measure to ward off COVID-19. We have four tips for you below to help your senior best prepare their immune system.

Good Hygiene
One of the best things your senior loved one can do is to wash their hands! This a great preventative practice to prevent the spread of germs, especially disease-causing germs. The CDC advises that each hand washing session should be at least 20 seconds of vigorously rubbing the hands together with an alcohol-based soap. Seniors should wash their hands before and after handling food, before eating, after using the bathroom, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose.

Proper Nutrition
Never underestimate the powers of healthy eating! Our senior citizens need more nutrients now as they have aged, and they can get these from eating well-balanced meals. This includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grain smart carbs, healthy fats, and plenty of protein. From these, your senior can consume Vitamins A, C, E, and Zinc, all of which help to boost the immune system.

Stay Active
Help your senior find a physical activity that they love and that matches their lifestyle! Getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercises will not only prevent against various diseases, but it will also help improve your senior’s immune system. Your senior can consider activities like yoga or tai chi, or even going for a daily walk outside (if practicing proper social distancing measures) or on the treadmill.

Reduce Stress
If your senior loved one is feeling stressed out, this can hinder their immune system’s ability to keep itself strong and fight off diseases and illnesses. Get your senior to focus on stress reduction. They can do this doing things that relax them, whether it’s exercising, participating in hobbies they enjoy, learning to meditate, or just getting a better night’s sleep.
